CelTx™ for Oral Soft Tissue Regeneration

In late-stage development, CelTx™ is a living cellular and collagen construct designed to regenerate soft tissue in the mouth (also known as oral mucosa or more commonly, gums). CelTx™ has been studied extensively as an alternative to patient-donated palate tissue.

In order to save teeth, every year 500,000 procedures are performed, which currently use soft tissue taken from the roof of the patient’s mouth and placed on the oral mucosa. Significant drawbacks include: (1) pain and morbidity, (2) limited tissue to treat all of the teeth requiring intervention, and (3) unappealing aesthetics due to poor color and texture match.

CelTx™ improves secondary intention healing, allowing the regeneration of tissue that has the same color and texture of the surrounding tissues. With CelTx™, Organogenesis hopes to address the drawbacks of oral soft tissue procedures for teeth, precluding the need for patient-donated tissue grafts, eliminating pain and complications at the patient-tissue donor site, and regenerating aesthetically appealing tissue.

With its clinical trials completed, Organogenesis filed an application for CelTx™ with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2009.
