Organogenesis Staying Put in Canton
April 4, 2008
Canton—The executives at Organogenesis Inc. considered nearly 20 sites in the state for a future headquarters. But in the end, they found a way to accommodate the biotech company's rapid expansion without needing to leave its current home.
The company plans to use two buildings near its existing headquarters site on Dan Road in Canton to create a three-building campus. The headquarters will move across the street to a building that Organogenesis' owners acquired last year to help ease the company's space crunch.
The company will spend the next three years retrofitting and prepping the buildings, and getting new manufacturing space approved by federal regulators. By the time the expansion is complete, Organogenesis CEO Geoff MacKay says he expects to more than double his current Canton work force of 220 people.
The final decision on the site took far longer than MacKay anticipated when he held a press conference nearly a year ago with Gov. Deval Patrick to announce plans to expand within Massachusetts. At the time, the Patrick administration pledged to provide up to $12.9 million in public incentives, including grants and tax credits for research-and-development expansions.
Patrick returned to Organogenesis today to reaffirm his administration's commitment to helping the company, which currently focuses on making skin patches used to heal leg and foot ulcers.
