A Canton biotech has struck a deal with a Chinese stem cell company.

Organogenesis Inc. has signed a memorandum of understanding with China's National Tissue Engineering Center, a stem cell and regenerative medicine consortium, headquartered in Shanghai, according to officials.

The Canton-based regenerative medicine company formed the three-phase agreement with the NTEC this past week, while visiting China as a delegate of Gov. Deval Patrick's trade mission.

According to the agreement, the first phase of the partnership would commence immediately, and include the commercializing and exporting existing Organogenesis Inc. technology—including its signature product, Apligraf®—in China, and eventually throughout Asia.

Phase two includes manufacturing existing Organogenesis cell therapies in Shanghai. Phase three includes the co-development of new technologies, which may be custom-designed for Chinese market needs. Organogenesis would hold the commercial rights for all Western markets for new technology developed.

The NTEC is a government-funded private company. Its founder, Yiling Cao, is a plastic surgeon who was trained at Harvard University and MIT, where Organogenesis was founded.
